Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone

I usually don’t watch anime (not anymore), but this is too good to not blog about.

Evangelion started out as a TV series back in 1997 (10 years ago!). Since then, they’ve released movies, re-releases, and now a re-re-release. Unlike Gundam, which comes out with new series one after another, these Evangelion guys just does the same things over and over again. But it’s still so good! In other words, they milk their fans hard, and the fans are happily milked.

The thing is, they’ve done this so much that now, with this latest release, it’s pretty much perfect every frame. It’s awesome. And just look at the poster will give you a sense of the style they use. First of all, they use a weird naming scheme (1.0? and there’s a 1.01 DVD release), and the tag line has double meaning that it really doesn’t say anything.

Now this re-re-release project is still on-going. There are plans for 3 more movies, and DVDs. Wikipedia explains. I can’t wait.

Apple Store Vancouver Opening Day

Line-up for Apple Store

Shirley and I went to the Opening Day event at the new Vancouver Apple Store. Before lining up, I was able snap some pictures of the line, and thanks to Shirley’s friend Erik, the queuing wasn’t so bad.

Inside Apple Store Vancouver

Super-quick checkout system. I didn’t notice a cashier when I was there.. Just swipe a card and you’re done. The store itself wasn’t big. Lots of good accessories on the walls. More pictures over at my flickr.

Not so related, but after that, Alex joined us for Indiana Jones 4. There were scenes that reminded me of Mario Kart, and I guess Spielberg was playing Boom Blox while making this movie.
AND THEN we played Boom Blox for hours. It was Awesome.

Yakitori

Yakitori

After watching that Japanese Tofu-delivery movie, it felt fitting to make yakitori for dinner. Good thing today is a holiday. More time to spend on things like this.

Made with George Foreman Grill - but I don’t recommend the grill. It’s always a pain to clean up. Unless the newer version has removable grille..

Yakitori is one of those things that doesn’t have any secrets. It is what you see, unlike Ramen, or Hot Dogs. And when you go to the store, you pay for their labour and service, not so much on their secret formula - although they do have one bucket of secret BBQ soy sauce blend if you order the Tare flavoured skewers.

Initial D

I finally remembered to watch “Initial D”, the HK movie based on the Japanese Manga/Anime. The movie looks nothing like the picture above, except for the car. I had no prior knowledge of the Initial D universe, but I got a taste of it through the movie. Kudos to them for shooting it on location in Japan.

My summary:

It’s a Story of a Tofu-delivery man. And he has a customer at the top of the mountain. So after years of delivery he got really good at delivering Tofu in a timely manner through those winding mountain roads. His car is shaped like a Tofu (pictured above).

Who the customer is remains a mystery. My guess is it’s some kind of resort or restaurant with nice views up there. They need a lot of Tofu.

Of course the main backdrop of the story is the underworld of drift racing. And the genius of this storyline is not something I can translate here, not that I know much of it. All I watched was this 3rd-party movie (which did a fine job).

Some cool trivia from imdb:

  • Three new Toyota AE86 Sprinter Truenos, a car out of production since 1987, were especially built by Toyota for the film.
  • A number of Toyota Trueno AE86 cars were used during production, at least one of which was personally wrecked by Jay Chou.

Ignore some flaws and it’s a pretty good movie. And it’s great to see Anthony Wong in there.

Thoughts

Chunk Ahoy! Cookies. Not my favorites but they’re pretty good. Some of them have so many chocolate chips on it that the cookie becomes just something to hold the chips together.

Summer is here. Living in warm weather is like living in a different world. I’m no longer hiding from the cold.

Slippers slapping on concrete floors, sound echoing through the warm air just like grandma’s house back in childhood.

Icelandic band “Múm” makes simple music out of simple sounds. Like drinking a clear glass of water (but not always).

It’s been a week since we got that lemon in the kitchen.
