midlife crisis

I’m not having one, but after work today, a guy driving an 80-ish porsche sped pass me and I ended up following him for half my trip home. He’s wearing a baseball cap so I don’t think he’s having one either. He’s just driving it for style. But driving behind a porsche made me think about what it meant.

In a lifetime, you’re either living in preparation of the future, or living for the present. Some people live their whole life preparing for the future, saving whatever till later. Some people live for the present the moment they’re born. Life’s too short to […].

Minus the people that do both and neither, then you’re left with people that live thinking of the future, then one day realize there might not be much future left. To me that’s the definition of a midlife crisis. They have money left from their future-preparing days, and now don’t know what to do with it. So they buy a porsche. In conclusion, porsches are a waste of money, so are a lot of other things, but porsche stands out as the symbol.

It’s a very interesting and insightful blog, Jonbu.

I think the 1 assumption that most of us make (because of the way we are raised) is that to live in the present means spend money now, and to live in the future means save money now. And money is a necessity to the heavenly life that we want to strive for. Somehow, the role of money has never been questioned. I think if we figure out what we really want to do with the money, there wouldn’t be a quarter-life or mid-life crisis.

I agree with Alex, this is a very insightful post…until I read the last paragraph. You are just jealous and a little part of you dreams about driving a porsche. If I were you, I won’t even think that deep because I know nothing about cars and I don’t want a porsche.

ha, I was going to say similar things (and then I forgot to). The last sentence or two almost seemed as if they were “note-to-self” by jonbu for jONY to remind him not to get a porche. :-)
